THE CREATION OF A CULTURAL SPACE FOR AJIJIC AND THE REALIZATION OF THE AJIJIC CULTURAL CENTER

(article by Beto Muñoz)

Over three decades ago, a group of enthusiastic young people saw their dreams come true when they secured a space from which their cultural promotion projects could materialize.

The old warehouse, which had been used as an animal jail, market, kindergarten, dance hall, cockfighting ring, and various other things, was ceded to them by the authorities to serve as Ajijic’s cultural center. The group called themselves “Arte, Cultura y Tradición” (Art, Culture, and Tradition). It was there that the atmosphere we now experience in Ajijic took shape, the cultural environment that attracts tourism to this beautiful town.

Years passed, directors of the space came and went, the list of cultural promoters grew, and finally, in August 2005, the old warehouse was demolished, and thanks to a citizen initiative, the building that now houses the Ajijic Cultural Center (CCA) was constructed.

The anniversary of these two historic moments in Ajijic’s cultural life will be celebrated starting Friday, August 16th, in the plaza and at the cultural center itself.
